Discovered the new 'tiny' frog species Diasporus in Costa Rica

Costa Rica scientists have confirmed the discovery of a new species of frog in the country, after receiving information from a tourist agent in the Talamanca mountains.

Four years ago, Stanley Salazar, a travel agent interested in understanding amphibians, informed Costa Rica University scientists (UCR) about a tiny frog he observed. in the Plátano forest in the Talamanca mountain range, and think it may be an unspecified species.

After a long time of verification, UCR's biological researchers published a paper in the journal Zootaxa confirming the findings, saying the new frog belongs to the Diasporus family and is scientifically named Diasporus amirae , according to Mr. Salazar's daughter's name, Ms. Amira Salazar Vásquez.

Individuals of this newly discovered frog are only 1-2cm in size, have a dark coffee color and a gray and blue belly, Diasporus amirae's distinctness from them is they 'bold' people ' more.

Another difference of Diasporus amirae is that they live in small pits very close to the ground, in other words, on low vegetation. Instead of continuous calling, they only sounded once in 5-10 minutes.

Because frogs are often silent when it rains, while Talamanca is a place with relatively thick rainfall, along with the above characteristics of Diasporus amirae, finding them is very difficult and so far researchers Only 10 specimens were found, all of them were males, in Plátano forest area, at a height of 1000m above sea level.

In Costa Rica alone, 5 species of Diasporus have been recorded, often called 'bell frogs' by indigenous peoples because of its distinctive sound.
