Discovered new species of crustaceans and mollusks in the Philippines

About 80 scientists, professionals, students and volunteers from 19 countries - surveyed the waters around Panglao Island, located 624 km southeast of Manila, since 2004- 2005.

'A lot of new species are seen and photographed, many species are seen for the first time. It is estimated that between 150 and 250 crustaceans and 1,500-2,500 species of molluscs are new species, ' said the team's research, led by scientist Philippe Bouchet of the French Museum of Natural History.

'However, a thorough comparison of all previously named species is needed to determine whether these newly discovered species are actually new species to science. This is a long and slow process, ' according to scientists.

According to Philippine officials, on February 5, Pangla Marine Biodiversity Project was exhibited at the National Museum of the Philippines more than 1.00 specimens of these newly discovered rare species.

The expedition said the survey found more than 1,200 ten-legged crustaceans - a group of crabs, shrimp, and lobsters - and about 6,000 mollusks.
