In an exploration of the mountains of Foja in Papua last June, scientists from the World Conservation Organization and the Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) discovered these two animals, including a giant Mallomys. Giant and a Cercartetus marsupial, one of the world's smallest marsupials.
According to Kristofer Helgen, a scientist from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, USA, the newly discovered rat is five times larger than the one that lives in the city. to the camp of scientists.
Here, scientists also found for the first time many rare and unknown birds. And they plan to continue Foja exploration in late 2008 or early 2009 in hopes of finding more new species of frogs, mammals, butterflies and plants.
Foja is part of the vast Mamberamo rainforest, in the province of Papua, Indonesia. This is one of the rare places on earth that has not been touched by humans. In 2005, a group of scientists made their first expedition to the area and discovered dozens of new plant and animal species. They called this " Eden Garden ".
