Discovered 'underground freshwater sea' under the Amazon underground

Brazilian scientists have announced the discovery of an 'underground freshwater ocean' under the Amazon region with reserves of up to 160 billion cubic meters and a total area of ​​1.3 million square kilometers.

According to Professor Francisco Assis Matos de Abreu, of Paris Federal University, the volume of underground freshwater is 3.5 times greater than the estimated volume of Guaraní Aquifer.

So far Guaraní, which has a total area of ​​1.2 million km ² spread under the territories of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, is still considered the largest freshwater reserve in South America and the world's leading.

Newly discovered freshwater reserves account for 80% of the Amazon region's natural water. In addition, the total amount of water in the Amazon tributaries - the largest total river system in the world - accounts for only about 8% of the freshwater in the region's natural communities dubbed 'the planet's lungs. Mr. Matos de Abreu also said that the 'freshwater ocean' mentioned above is known as the large geological aquifer of the Amazon aquifer (SAGA - in Portuguese abbreviation) and its formation began from about 135 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period.

Like Guaraní, SAGA spreads under the territory of many South American countries, but up to 67% of this 'underground lake' water reserve lies within Brazil.

About 10 years ago, when studying the Alter do Chao Aquifer, in the state of Pará, northern Brazil, scientists from the Federal University of Pará discovered that this was only part of a geological system. large, including many underground sediment pools of the Amazon region and expanded its work until SAGA was discovered.
