Discovering a hundred million year old crater in Quang Ngai

Experts found in the area near the coast of Ba Lang An (Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district) intact the ancient crater vestiges dating back millions of years.

Talking to the PV, Master Nguyen Tuan Lam - expert of underwater cultural heritage archeology - said the ancient crater mouth is about 30m wide. Here, the ecological topography spreads out to the surrounding area with many basalt lands, balad stone columns look quite unique.

"Comparison of geological structure, the first step of research to determine Ly Son - Binh Chau island with the topography, rich and beautiful ecological geomorphology spread about 40km 2 from many volcanic eruptions. The earliest date was about 6 million years ago and the latest about 3,000 years ago, " Lam said.

On this occasion, scientists also found traces of various volcanic eruptions at the summit of Gieng Tien, Thoi Lui (Big Island) and Bai Sau (Be Island), Ly Son island district.

Dr. Pham Quoc Quan - Member of the National Cultural Heritage Council - said that after many days of survey, experts identified tectonic geology from Binh Chau volcanic activity and Ly Son island having a relationship. together. Worship, worship, production, seafaring of residents, excavation of archaeological relics in these two localities have many similarities .

According to Mr. Quan, the discovery of craters has created a special feature in the islands of Vietnam. The geological site here deserves the UNESSCO proposal to be recognized as a global geopark.

Currently, Quang Ngai province has allowed the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to coordinate with Doan Anh Duong Company to invite experts to complete records of wrecked ancient ruins in Binh Chau waters and submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. national ranking relics calendar; submit to the Government to rank the population of historical and cultural relics of Ly Son island district to become a special national monument.

Earlier, in October 2014, divers and some archaeologists also discovered stone arches with many beautiful corals living parasites, about 6 meters above the water surface curved in arc shape and about 20m long. The stone arch is close to the coast of An Binh commune, Ly Son island district. Experts said that this is a mark of lava from volcanic eruption when sea water froze, creating this spectacular stone arch.

Research results of Vietnam Institute of Archeology show that Ly Son island district was formed due to the remnants of volcanic eruption activities millions of years ago. This pre-island island has volcanic terrain that accounts for 70% of the area. There are many relics created from the eruption of volcanic lava such as Hang Cau, Hang Pagoda, Dam Pagoda, Archway . with great value for tourism.
