EU 'fight' with tobacco

The 27 EU member states that are studying Ireland prohibit smoking in all public places in the home (work, café, restaurant .).

EU Medical Commissioner Markos Kyprianou is also proposing to strengthen the construction of a ban on tobacco throughout the EU to stop passive smoking both outside.

Official figures show that cigarettes kill 79,000 people in Europe each year, with about 1 out of 10 deaths related to tobacco.

Scotland has now followed Ireland's example and will ban smoking in pubs, cafés, offices and other public places on July 1 next.

A number of other EU countries have also enacted a ban on cigarettes, allowing only smokers in specific areas of restaurants and pubs.

A poll published last year said many people welcomed the ban on cigarettes: more than 80% of people surveyed across the EU said they supported the ban on smoking in all public places. home

Italy, Sweden and Malta currently only allow smoking in separate areas. Estonia and Finland are also about to implement similar measures by the end of this year, while France will pass this law next year. France has banned smoking in some public buildings.

However, there are still some other EU countries that do not have a plan to ban tobacco.
