Vatnajokull, with an area of 8,300 km2, is the third largest glacier in the world after glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland. After the recent eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano, this glacier was covered in black.
Because of the volcanic ash, this glacier can warm up in the summer, increasing the melting. In addition, the ability of birds to lay eggs in search of familiar nesting places may be affected.
Grimsvotn volcano, located on the cracked area in southeast Iceland, woke up on May 22, creating a column of ash and dust 20km high rising into the sky.The airspace of Iceland was closed for a short time and many flights in Germany and England were canceled later.
On May 25, Icelandic meteorologists confirmed that Grimsvotn volcano stopped erupting ash but only released steam. However, the ash cloud still lingers in the air until May 29.
Another volcano in Iceland, Eyjafjallajokul, has disrupted air traffic throughout Europe in 2010. Grimsvotn volcano releases 10 times as much ash as Eyjafjallajokull, but the dust particles of Grimsvotn are different and large chemical structures. More about size.
Grimsvotn dust particles fall faster and do not stay too long on the air.
Grimsvotn is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland. It has erupted many times in the last 100 years. The most recent eruption was in 2004 and the eruption was the strongest since 1934.
