Every day the world loses 150 animal and plant species
The alarming figure was announced by German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel at the United Nations World Conference on Nature Protection, taking place in Bonn, Germany from May 19-30.
Gathering about 5,000 experts from 191 countries and territories, the conference focused on considering the implementation of the UN's Nature Protection Agreement, which came into force in 1993, to ensure the preservation and protection of the rich and diverse of ecological environment.
The host environment minister said that today the world loses 150 out of 1.7 million plants and animals. Particularly in Germany, the existence of one-third of plant species, of which ¼ of herbs are threatened. 50% of medicinal uses currently used in Germany are based on herbal sources, many of which are in old-growth forests threatened with destruction. Meanwhile, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) '' Planetary Index ' report said that since the early 1970s the population of animals, fish and birds living in the wild has declined on average. nearly 1/3 (27%).
Surveying the population of 4,000 species from Amur tigers, orangutans to green and polar bears from 1970 to 2005, WWF found that the number of individuals living on land decreased by 25%, marine life by 28%, and fresh water decreased by 29%. Scientists think that the species that disappears from Earth the most are the 'victims' of overfishing, expanding the area of cultivation that leads to narrowing the habitat of species, buying and selling wild animals. wild, environmental pollution or climate change, all caused by human behavior. UN experts believe that human activity, including greenhouse gas emissions, threatens to cause the worst extinction on Earth since dinosaurs were destroyed 65 million years . The UN Environment Program currently has more than 16,000 plant and animal species threatened with extinction.
If not to stop the extinction of many animal and plant species that are at an alarming rate, experts believe that humans and others will receive consequences once the diversity of the ecological environment is tomorrow and lost. In the future, in particular, the world is in danger of losing a large amount of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory therapy and many other diseases, including cancer, from herbs. 'No one can escape the impact of the environment because of reduced global biodiversity, meaning that mankind will have less of the new pharmaceuticals prepared (due to the lack of medicinal herbs), will more influenced by the warming of the Earth phenomenon . ' , James Leape, WWF general director warned.
