Excel again in danger of being attacked?

Picture 1 of Excel again in danger of being attacked? Added a new security bug in the recently discovered Microsoft Excel spreadsheet application and released yesterday (July 6).

The French Security Incident Response Team is the unit that discovered the latest security bug in Microsoft Excel. The security researcher said hackers could take advantage of this security flaw to hijack the user's system.

This security error arises because a memory error occurs when the application processes or repairs a file with too long content. Hackers can take advantage of this security error to execute binary commands by tricking users into opening and editing a specially programmed Excel file.

The French Security Incident Response Team said that Excel 2000, 2002 and 2003 versions, along with Office 2000, 2002 and 2003 office applications, all suffered from this security error.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company is currently conducting further research on the French Security Incident Response Team report and has confirmed that no attacks have been made by taking advantage of the security breach.

" In order to be able to conduct an attack by taking advantage of this security error, the attacker must first trick the user into opening a malicious Excel file sent by email or by any other path ," Microsoft spokesman said. " We recommend users to be careful when opening files sent with email ."

According to Microsoft, this newly discovered security bug also affects Excel versions in Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

This has been the third security error in Excel discovered in about a month. On June 16, a security error in Excel was discovered that was taken advantage of in the attacks. Two weeks later another security error was discovered.
