Fish love so loudly ... to make dolphins deaf
Every spawning season of the Gulf of Mexico corvina will echo the invitations to mates that scientists like "huge machine gunfire" puncturing the eardrum of dolphins and seals.
Recently, American scientists have called for the protection of corvina fish (known in Vietnam as yellow whale) typical of the Gulf of Mexico (California) because of "rare landscape" that this fish create every breeding season, which attracts many visitors, can disappear.
The corvina is a pretty much caught species - (photo: Aburto).
Each spring, this fish will gather in the Colorado River Delta, north of the Gulf of Mexico and simultaneously call for a mate. Worth mentioning, their "love" sound is quite large and with a huge number of giant fishes talking in unison, the canoes on the bay can be heard very clearly. Scientists say it is sometimes equivalent to . a big machine gun is firing.
To study this particular cry, a team of scientists from the University of Texas used specialized audio equipment. They found that this sound has a quite special frequency and wavelength, which can reverberate through the fishing hulls and sound clearly on the water surface (usually the call to the mates of the fish only resounds in the country) .
The research team also found an interesting detail: quite a lot of "neighbors" are quite upset about the "love" of the corvina. The loud sound that the fish made even made some dolphins, seals and sea lions nearby . deaf.
However, the corvina herd in this area is threatened. According to the research team, about 2 million individuals are caught each year, much faster than their reproduction rate. Without conservation measures, this legendary love song can be absorbed in the Gulf of Mexico.
