Found 2,000 year old earrings

Israeli archaeologists have found a sophisticated earrings made of gold, pearls and emeralds in Jerusalem. This finding helps to understand more about the life of the upper class in the holy land two millennia ago.

Archaeologist Dr. Doron Ben-Ami and colleagues found the earring under a parking lot near the walls of the old Jerusalem area, while excavating a construction project from the Byzantine Empire. The construction is dated to a few hundred years of earrings, so Doron thinks it has been handed down for generations.

" The piercings look very nice and sophisticated. It certainly belongs to a high-class person in Jerusalem. Ordinary people cannot own such a precious thing ," Doron said.

Shimon Gibson, an archaeologist who did not participate in the excavation, said that the discovery of Doron and his colleagues is a miracle. " People rarely find jewels in Jerusalem because precious metals are often sold or smelted after the battles that took place throughout the history of the holy land. The advice will help historians better understand life of noble women 2,000 years ago, "he said.

Doron also asserted that archaeologists seldom found relics from the Roman Empire in Jerusalem because the city was devastated in the first century AD. The piercings were preserved intact because they were in the ruins of an old building. Its location shows that this jewelry is older than construction.

The Israeli Antiquities Administration said that the earrings were made using a very popular technique in Egypt when the country was part of the Roman empire. Archaeologist Doron hopes he and his colleagues will find many other jewelry in future excavations.
