On September 11, Tim Kinght of the Wildlife At Risk - WAR said a Vietnamese entomologist had accidentally discovered four new dragonflies and dragonflies on Phu Quoc island.

While surveying butterflies in Phu Quoc from April to July 2007, the team of biologist Bui Huu Manh discovered four new dragonfly species on the island. These four species have never been recorded before in Vietnam. Scientific names of four newly recorded species include: Rhyothemis obsolescens, Lyriothemis mortoni, Pseudagrion williamsonii, Prodasineura auricolor .

These latest discoveries provide further evidence that Phu Quoc Island is a treasure trove of undiscovered national and regional animal and plant species. Lyriothemis mortoni, for example, is an extremely rare species and is only recorded in some areas in Southeast Asia.

Significantly, Rhyothemis obsolescens is a common occurrence in Phu Quoc Island. However, this species has not been recorded in the official list of Vietnam, which suggests that ecosystem surveys are very urgent.

Currently only in the past year, more than 50 species of dragonflies and dragonflies have been recorded in Phu Quoc Island, mainly found through a butterfly survey funded by WAR's NGO Wildlife At Risk. .
