Sudeep Chandra, an environmental scientist at the University of Nevada, and colleagues discovered giant goldfish when they surveyed species in Lake Tahoe in the area between Nevada and California, Livescience reported.

"During the survey, we discovered about 15 large goldfish in an area. That is a sign that they swim in the herd , " Chandra said.

The weight of the largest goldfish reaches 2.2kg, while the body length is about 45cm.

The team guesses that some people have dropped goldfish into Lake Tahoe. Dropping ornamental fish into lakes, rivers and streams is quite common behavior of the American people. Chandra is concerned about the situation, because goldfish are invasive. They can disturb the ecosystem in Lake Tahoe.

"Goldfish are just one of the invasive species in Lake Tahoe. They eat native species. In addition, they emit substances that can cause algal blooms, causing the clarity of the lake water to decrease." Chandra said.
