Gold has the ability to make men ... sterilize
Scientists have discovered a new method of contraception for men: transplanting gold into the testicles to kill sperm.
A group of biologists from Anhui University, China implanted a mixture of nanoscale gold rods into the testes of male mice. Then they projected infrared rays into the testicles. In this way, gold nanoparticles will be heated.
To a suitable temperature, the testicles are hot enough to kill sperm cells, but do not kill cells that produce new sperm. If at high temperatures, gold molecules can kill sperm-producing cells, and lead to infertility.
In the future, people can use gold as a contraceptive method for men.
This method is currently only tested in mice. To be able to apply it to humans, scientists have to find a way to ensure that gold nanoparticles don't migrate to other organs and that laser light will only focus on the testes. In addition, research is needed to make sure that this method can be used for a long time.
Scientists are trying to find new methods of contraception for men, but the results are quite limited.
