About a quarter of adults in the UK grapple with basic calculations in everyday life, as their level of calculation is only equal to or less than that of elementary school students.

The British government conducted a skill survey called "The Skills for life" nationwide. Government employees met 7,200 people aged between 16 and 65 and tested their basic skills such as reading letters, calculating numbers, Telegraph reported.

The results show that more than 8 million adults, equivalent to about 25% of the total population in the population, are only able to calculate the equivalent or lower numbers of children aged 7 to 9 years. The rate of people with English proficiency equivalent to or less than primary school students is 5%, equivalent to 1.7 million people. The ability to calculate numbers of people aged 16-19 tends to decrease significantly.
