According to Reuters, the goal of the automakers is to make charging an electric car as simple as filling the car.

The seven automakers involved in the deal include General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen AG, Audi, Daimler AG, Porsche and BMW.

Electric vehicles at Ford, Mike Tinskey, say that supercharging on electric cars such as the GM Chevrolet Volt and Ford Focus Electric make them really popular with customers.

According to Reuters, the charger technology backed by Ford and others in the group will be presented at an electric car conference in Los Angeles this week.

However, the new technology is thought to be incompatible with the technology currently used by Japanese automakers. For example, Nissan's Leaf electric car uses its own charging technology called CHAdeMO .

Ford representatives believe the new charging system will be mass-marketable in its electric vehicles since 2020.

Meanwhile, ACEA, a group of European automakers, said it will use new charging technology on all electric vehicles sold in the market beginning in 2017.
