Himalayan glaciers melt quickly under the influence of climate change
According to a report by the International Center for Mountain Conservation and Development, Himalayan glaciers in Nepal and Bhutan have been narrowed by 21% and 22% over the past 30 years due to the effects of climate change. A three-year study funded by Sweden shows that 10 other glaciers in the region are also being narrowed.
Another study found that the amount of snow covering the Himalayas in the past 10 years has also decreased significantly.
'These reports have provided new and detailed information on the effects of climate change on one of the world's most vulnerable ecosystems' - Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Commission on Climate change, says, AFP quoted.
'They give us a better understanding of the area, as well as point out the gaps to be filled and the actions needed to cope with the challenges of climate change'.
According to scientists, the impact of climate change on the Himalayas could be devastating because the region is a source of food and energy for 1.3 billion people living in downstream river basins.
