How have people devastated the ocean for decades?

Good, Vietnam is one of the countries with the largest amount of ocean waste in the region.

How is the ocean being destroyed by humans?

Based on observations of ocean currents for 35 years - from 1975 to 2010, NASA published a clip describing the path of waste in the ocean.

To accomplish this, scientists have released science buoys at different locations, then observed the ocean's flow.

They concluded that garbage was taken away by the ocean currents, gathered into five giant 'trash islands' in the world's oceans.

Every year, human species emit up to 8 million tons of trash - a figure that is enough to fill 5 garbage bags per 30cm along the beaches on Earth.

This includes plastic bottles, ball bags, plastic items - materials that are almost indistinguishable from nature. Some scientists even believe that this figure could reach 12.7 million, if including the amount of waste sinking to the ocean floor.

Up to 8 million tons of non-persistent waste is released to the ocean each year

According to Dr. Jenna Jambec of the University of Georgia, USA: "Humans will be engulfed by their own garbage."

Jenna added, this amount of garbage is still somewhat harmful to the life of marine life . Sea turtles can eat wrong plastic bags because they think that jellyfish, nylon cannot decompose, and create obstacles to prevent food from entering the stomach. Consequently, they can starve to death.

Seabirds often confuse plastic bags into food

Or seabirds can confuse garbage into food. According to statistics, 90% of the albatrosses died in Bac Hai (the North Atlantic Ocean) have plastic bags or plastic in their stomachs. In addition, human health can be affected by eating fish that once swallow plastic.

According to the data collected, the scientists analyzed the data based on 192 coastal countries. Half of this waste comes from 5 countries: China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam and SriLanKa . In particular, China is responsible for 28% of the total garbage, equivalent to 2.4 million tons of garbage.

This number will not stop there. It is predicted that in 15 years from 2010 to 2015, there will be 155 million tons of non-compostable waste discharged into the ocean - enough to create a 30-meter high wall surrounding the coast all over the world.

If not counting the amount of garbage sinking into the sea, the number of garbage could reach 12.7 million tons.

According to Rolan Geyer, associate professor of biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara: ' This means that we need to prevent waste from entering the sea immediately. The management of reuse of materials in countries needs to be more efficient, while finding ways to use biodegradable materials instead. '
