How to decorate the Christmas tree

Two students, Nicole Wrightman and Alex Craig of the Department of Social Mathematics at Sheffied University, UK, used computers to build mathematical formulas to decorate a perfect Christmas tree.

Upcoming Christmas 2017, do you know how to decorate a Christmas tree? Is there a recipe for decorating the tree for beautiful and eye-catching?Two students, Nicole Wrightman and Alex Craig of the Department of Social Mathematics at Sheffied University, UK, used computers to build mathematical formulas to decorate a perfect Christmas tree.

Instructions on how to decorate beautiful Christmas trees

According to Gizmag, this formula is based on the height of the tree, thereby calculating the number of decorative objects, the length of the tinsel, the length of the flashing string wrapped around the trunk and the height of the star , even the size of the angel sitting on top of the tree.

If a 180cm high Christmas tree will have 37 decorative items, the length of the tinsel is 919cm.

Wrightman said it took two hours with Craig to complete this math formula. The two students hope they will make a small contribution to the happiness of the Christmas season. This formula is as follows:

  • The number of decorative objects = √17 / 20 x height of the tree (√ is the square root).
  • The length of purl strands = 13 x ∏ / 8 x height of the tree (∏ is pi with 3.14159).
  • The length of the array of lights flashing around the trunk = 3.14159 x the height of the tree.
  • The height of the star or the angel statue = 1/10 of the height of the tree (the size is calculated in centimeters).

Through the above formula, a 180cm high Christmas tree will have 37 decorative objects, the length of the tinsel strings is 919cm, the length of the flashing lights around the trunk is 565cm, the height of the star or an angel statue on the tree top is 18cm. And the Christmas tree at the 21m high square requires 433 decorations, 100m tinsel, 65m rope wrapped around and the star is 2m high.
