Hundreds of people died from typhoons and floods in the Philippines

The Philippine government said 240 people were killed and nearly half a million people were displaced during the terrible flood caused by Typhoon Ketsana in the capital Manila and many surrounding areas.

Rescuers worked relentlessly to salvage the bodies of victims from flooded rivers. Meanwhile, people started cleaning up the mud covering their houses.

Calling for help from the international community, the Philippine government acknowledges that it may not have the resources to cope with another storm but is forecasting to be formed in the east and possibly landed in the country. this island next Friday (September 4).

Big storms carry long heavy rain, causing the worst flood in the Philippines in over 40 years. In addition to 240 people killed, 37 people are still missing. About 375,000 people are living in shelter, 3 times higher than the previous statistics.

According to authorities, casualties caused by Ketsana storms also increased when rescuers had access to isolated villages in the sea.

Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro said that by this time soldiers and police officers and volunteers had saved more than 7,900 people. However, there is more information about the number of deaths yet to be determined.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Teodoro said that help from governments would ensure the Philippines could continue the relief work. He acknowledged the situation would be worse if the relief resources were exhausted.

" We are trying our best to provide the necessary items. But the situation is more likely to be more serious ," Teodoro said. " We can't let that happen ."

Meanwhile, President Gloria Arroyo said she was opening the Malacanang Presidential Palace to those who had to evacuate to avoid floods.

" Evacuees will be provided with shelter in some areas of Malacanang buildings and in tents erected between buildings, " Arroyo said in a statement.
