ICANN successfully tested international domain names
ICANN domain management organization said that it has successfully completed the testing of international domain name system.
Currently the Internet domain name system only accepts 37 characters, including digits and letters of the Latin alphabet and hyphen (-).
But in the world there are many countries that use a completely separate alphabet system like Arabic or Chinese. Countries like this have long wanted to use a domain name system to accept their letters in the alphabet.
ICANN's new success will help that desire come closer to reality. Many people believe that this step will be a very important part of maintaining the integrity of the global Internet.
ICANN's international domain system testing was officially launched in October 2006. The ultimate goal of testing is to check whether the use of encrypted international characters in domain names affects the operation of the global Internet root server system. If so, then it is a reasonable solution.
" There is no effect on the Internet-based server system ," said Lars-Johan Liman, one of the testers. " The systems participating in the test still work normally. "
The details of the test and the results are now available on the ICANN official website.
This test result is only the first step in the application of international domain names. ICANN will also have to conduct further tests before deploying the IDN domain application.
