The US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Indonesian National Earthquake Monitoring Center said the seismic incident occurred on Simeulue Island, about 1,485 km northwest of Jakarta.
Dailin Wang, an oceanographer at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, said the seismic was not strong enough to cause a tsunami.
"We have not received notice of casualties or physical damage , " said Ikhwandi, a police officer from Sinabang City on Simeulue Island.
Detailed information about human and property losses in Indonesian earthquakes often does not reach the government immediately due to communication difficulties.
Simeulue is from Indonesia's Aceh province, where it lost 170,000 people in the tsunami in December 2004.
