Industrial waste sludge fertilizing plants: Dangerous!

There is a situation of using sludge in industrial zones to apply for green trees. This is considered dangerous because it is full of toxic substances. When rainwater is encountered, they will infiltrate soil, causing surface water, groundwater and soil quality.

This is the affirmation of Dr. Nguyen Thi Van Ha, Department of Environmental Management, Department of Environment, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in the study of risk assessment of pollution from industrial parks (IPs) in Ho Chi Minh City. .

According to Dr. Ha, the use of sewage sludge from centralized wastewater treatment plants to apply for green trees as many units are currently applying is unable to continue. The cause in this mud also has many types of hazardous substances, when it comes to rain water, it will affect surface water, groundwater and soil quality.

Test results show that the extract from the above sludge has COD content (domestic organic matter); High concentrations of aluminum, iron, chrome, nickel, cream and copper.

Research results also indicate that Hiep Phuoc, Tan Binh, Le Minh Xuan, Tan Tao and Tan Thuan Export Processing Zones are places that create high risks to water pollution. The IPs that are assessed as lower dangerous are: Binh Chieu, Linh Trung 1, Linh Trung 2, Cat Lai 2, Tan Phu Trung, Tay Bac Cu Chi and Tan Thoi Hiep.

However, wastewater from industrial parks and export processing zones is assessed to be mild to moderate toxicity. Wastewater from pesticide manufacturing industry is evaluated to be the most toxic, followed by paper production with leather and waste water. Plating and textile dyeing wastewater is said to have low toxicity.
