Intel is about to launch a new platform
According to a senior Intel official, the platform named "Caneland" for multi-processor server systems (MP) will be announced by the company in the third quarter.
The new platform will include the new quad-core processor Intel once called the "Tigerton", essentially the energy-efficient Xeon 7300 series. The new chip has a power consumption of 80 watts - for standard slot server systems, and 50 watts for blade server systems. So far, Intel has not revealed details about this chip (configuration as well as clock speed).
Along with the Caneland platform, Intel will also introduce the new 7300 chipset model (codenamed "Clarksboro") with the ability to support some of Intel's newer technologies such as: 4 high-speed interconnects, 64MB filters to increase Increase system traffic, DIMM technology with DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 to increase system memory. The new chipset also incorporates Intel's I / O Acceleration Technology 2 technology, which speeds up data transfer between server and network applications.
Intel's new platform is announced as the company is aggressively shifting to new technology lines: 65-nm and 45-nm. The first 45-nm "Penryn" series will be released later this year with dual-core and quad-core chips for desktops, PCs and servers.
Next year, Intel will unveil a new processor platform called "Nehalem" and will then embark on 32-nm technology in 2009. Today (May 9), Intel will be mainstream. launches fourth generation Centrino mobile platform - Santa Rosa for consumer and business laptop products.
