International discussion on nuclear power safety in Ninh Thuan

Japanese and Vietnamese experts have just had four days to discuss safety for nuclear power plants to be built in Ninh Thuan, which focuses on environmental management.

Mr. Nobuaki Sato - Head of the expert team of Japan Electricity Information Center (JEPIC) said the discussion focused on three main issues: environmental impact assessment; environmental management (radiation and non-radiation) in construction and operation; and environmental radiation monitoring and safe culture.

Natural and artificial radioactive materials are widely used in the medical, industrial, agricultural and research industries. Emissions of solid, gas and liquid form radiation and non-radiation generated during the construction and operation of nuclear power plants need to be strictly controlled and managed safely to ensure for the public and the environment is protected in a sustainable way.

According to the deputy director of Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, developing nuclear power is one of the key applications of developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, which is very significant important for socio-economic development, ensuring energy security and improving the country's scientific and technological potential.

Besides the workshop, exhibition of product models as well as answers to local residents' questions took place, with the support of JEPIC experts and Japanese Atomic Power Company (JAPC).

The first two nuclear power plants in Vietnam will be built in Ninh Thuan province in cooperation with Russian and Japanese partners.
