According to the French news agency AFP, this seal was found near the Western Wall of the Old City in Jerusalem and was identified from the 7th century BC. On the seal is a picture of two men wearing skirts, facing each other like mirroring. Below this image is an ancient Jewish inscription, meaning "To the City Mayor".
Archaeologist Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah, of the Israel Antiquities Agency, highlighted the importance of discovering this artifact, because the mayor was only known in the Bible so far. This is the first time that Israeli archaeologists have discovered such an artifact at the relic site dating back to the 7th century BC. The artifact does not mention the name of the city mayor or the name of the ancient citadel in Jerusalem, but archaeologists believe the seal relates to the Citadel.
Archaeologists hope further research on this artifact will reveal interesting information.
