The 60m-wide factory, 145m long, was built in the 2nd century at the center of Portus port with large bricks, concrete pillars and wooden roofs.
In addition to building and repairing ships, the factory is also used to store wood, fabrics and many other equipment and supplies.
'So far very few Roman shipyards have been found and if our findings are correct, Portus will be the largest old shipyard in Italy and the Mediterranean region , ' Simon Keay of Southampton University said.
Portus is an important commercial gateway connecting Rome and the Mediterranean region during the long reign of the Roman Empire (from 27 BC to 565 AD). The harbor was built in 98 to 117 BC under Emperor Trajan.
