The Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA) intends to abandon a mission to explore the Moon. The spacecraft was built 10 years ago because this purpose was broken after many flight delays.
The Lunar-A cylindrical spacecraft aims to study the origin and evolution of the Moon. It will fly for six months in orbit around the Moon, bringing two probes with instruments to measure the temperature and seismic activity on the Moon's surface.
The initial launch was scheduled in August 2004 to be postponed several times due to technical issues.
According to Takashi Nakajima, according to the timeline, the Lunar-A spacecraft has been badly damaged and at some stage will no longer be usable. The final decision will be made at the end of February.
However, JAXA does not remove other Lunar exploration programs. This agency especially hopes to bring astronauts to the Moon by 2020 to build a residential base and operate in 2030.
Japan's space programs had many failures, as in late 2005, a probe failed to carry samples of an asteroid to Earth and in November 2003, one Missiles carrying reconnaissance satellites were destroyed while flying.
