By using carbon isotope analysis, scientists have found the exact age of this piece of melon. Scientists are surprised to see that this piece of melon is still in very good condition, because when buried in such wet and deep conditions, it is easy to decompose microorganisms. and crumbled, not quite as intact as this melon peel.
The area where this old melon peel was discovered is Moriyama region - 330km southwest of Tokyo. The melon seeds are still often found by archaeologists when excavating some parts of the region, but they have never unearthed an intact melon.
