Japanese nuclear pollution will last for decades

AFP news agency on March 21 led the news that the French Nuclear Safety Agency (ASN) said radioactive contamination leaking from Japan's Fukushima I nuclear power plant will last for decades.

Speaking at a press conference in Paris, the head of ASN, Andre Claude Lacoste stressed, radioactive leaks from the Fukushima nuclear power plant are serious and are still ongoing. Lacoste warned Japan it would take decades to solve this problem.

Meanwhile, Japanese officials have announced that many more contaminated foods with unusually high levels of radiation have been found, including vegetables, food and especially canned milk products. Japan has banned the transport of milk from Fukushima Prefecture, where nuclear power plants have problems after a magnitude 9 earthquake on March 11.

Although it claims to have made progress in overcoming the incident at the Fukushima I nuclear power plant, there are continuing incidents. In the evening of March 21, Japan had to evacuate seven staff urgently from the No.2 reactor area after discovering a black smoke column rising here. Soon after, white smoke continued to rise from the spent fuel storage tank of the No. 3 reactor. Japan continues to pump seawater to stabilize the temperature of the reactors.
