This 'Frankenstein' bacterium quickly developed. In the laboratory, they now have more than 1,000 generations.

Scientists hope to determine whether the 'ancient' bacterium will evolve like before extinction, or will develop into a new and different body to suit a new future.

'This is almost like we can go back to the beginning and review a tape of the life of the molecule ,' esciencenews.com quoted Betül Kaçar, a fellow of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Bacteria seem to exist only in illusions that have rapidly mutated, with some becoming stronger and stronger than today's bacteria, according to the team's report before NASA's International Space Biology Science conference.

The Kaçar expert said that the process could allow scientists to solve some long-standing questions about evolution and molecules in biology.

One of them is whether the history of an organism limits its future, and whether evolution always leads to a single outcome or a multitude of solutions to a problem?
