South Korea will choose two astronauts among tens of thousands of applicants by the end of this year.

A committee of many researchers at the Korean Space Research Institute (KARI) began to review candidates from April 21. About 33,000 candidates have applied, including 26,600 male candidates 6,400 female candidates.

The Ministry of Science and Technology and KARI are responsible for performing health checks for candidates to select 300 people. With the registered number as above, the odds ratio is 100 get 1.

Tests were conducted in five areas: Daejeon, Gangneung, Jeju, Seoul, Busan and Gwangju. Young male candidates must run 3.5 km in 23 minutes, 28 minutes for women. Then candidates who pass the health exam will take an English writing test, scientific knowledge and other fields on August 6-8.

After this round, the remaining candidates will take a quiz on many issues. Candidates not only have proper health but also have good knowledge, can speak foreign languages, solve problems and make accurate decisions. After this first round of selection, 300 people will be selected by the end of next month.

300 selected people will undergo 3 months of training from September to December to continue selecting the 10 best candidates . KARI will finally choose 2 astronauts after a thorough health examination and neurological examination. The two astronauts will continue to train at the Gargarin Astronaut Training Center in Russia.

One of the two astronauts will be selected to join the crew on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) in April 2008. A process of selection and arduous training is an honor for the chosen person: the first Korean astronaut to enter space.
