Letter to the future from 2019: Dear fighters against climate change, hope is not over yet

Although the Earth has reached its limit, even though its emissions are reaching a record level, everything has not ended.

The Earth in recent years is constantly witnessing unhappy things. According to a recent UN report, global emissions have reached a record level, with 55.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 alone. The land has reached the tipping point , which Greta Thunberg warned during a speech at the UN meeting, based on a report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). .

But it is not that humankind is calm, just that we are trying not enough. All hope has not ended, and the letter from the future below will somehow help us make a difference.

The letter was published in Science Alert, as part of the #ClimateStrike global climate march campaign.

Dear warriors in 2019,

I know, you guys are having extremely difficult years. Heat shocks come, go and come again, while the world does not seem to be taking action in time to respond to climate change disasters.

Although fully aware of the ongoing climate change and the impact of greenhouse gas emissions. But hundreds of years have passed, honestly, the only way to reduce carbon emissions is the most effective.

You are approaching a very fragile boundary. Only in the next few years, when industries continue to operate as usual, you will have to see many losses: the wild nature fades, the shelters are destroyed, and even human life is not Exception.

But on this Earth, we are more united than you think. The whole world has been aware of what climate change is like, and many people are afraid it will affect future generations. So, hope is not off yet.

What you are feeling right now is actually accumulating for many years, and you are at a time when you can change everything. After the report showed the seriousness from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the marches took place all over the world. And in the end, the heads of state had to admit that we can't abuse fossil fuels the way they all are.

Change began to occur in Europe and spread to the world. Renewable fuels are gradually being accepted and show high efficiency. The whole life on this blue planet depends on it.

At your time, technology is not yet complete, but research investments are getting stronger. Soon, you'll find society run on clean energy like wind, the Sun, water, and some water as nuclear power.

With such changes, people are trying to keep the Earth's temperature rising below 2 degrees Celsius. The Paris Agreement on climate change (2015) - which many people still see as meaningless - will gradually prove its worth.

The coal-fired power plant will eventually shut down in 2068. In my time, it was like a historical monument, treasured like the steam engines and phone booths of old friends.

Cars will run on energy from hydrogen, and the whole world will be able to breathe the cleanest air since the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century.

Even so, even when the temperature rise of 2 degrees C is controlled, there are still many problems to be solved. You will lose many islands because of rising sea levels, and witness the massive migration wave due to climate change. The creatures are also slowly disappearing, and much of Australia's Great Barrier Reef will disappear.

But if it doesn't change quickly in 2020, things will get even worse. Your children and grandchildren all depend on it.

In my day - 2089, there are still many problems to be solved. The future also cannot be perfect. But we will look at how you did it as a reference, and there are better solutions.

You can do it. We look forward to it.

Since 2089,
