Many dykes are eroded, threatening Hanoi

On the afternoon of November 2, while many inner city streets were still flooded, dozens of kilometers of suburban dikes and dams in Hanoi were severely eroded. In My Duc, the risk of dyke breaks is very high because water pressure has exceeded the record in 1971, thousands of households have moved.

The Red River dike line had a problem of slumping, sliding the dike roof, river bank, especially in Me Linh and Dan Phuong districts. In Thanh Liet dam, the dam stops flooding water from Nhue river into Hanoi city, the water has overflowed. Here, many canals have been placed to prevent water.

In My Duc district, there were about 16 km of landslides, 2,000 households had to relocate. The risk of breaking the dike line of the district is very high because the water pressure has exceeded the high water level, while the flood continues to flood.

Visits at the scene, Hanoi Party Committee Secretary Pham Quang Nghi asked My Duc district authorities to concentrate on strengthening dykes and dams.
