According to the latest information, CDC said the epidemic has spread from California to Virginia.

Pregnant women may be at risk from this disease. Three deaths in the state of New Mexico, Kansa and Wyoming are being studied in relation to damaged fruits.

CDC warns the number of victims is increasing. The incubation period can last more than 4 weeks.

Professor Dr Robert Tauxe of CDC said that prolonged incubation period is really a problem. People who eat food that has been contaminated for the past week or two may develop illness a few weeks later.

The source of the disease is identified from the melon grown on the site in Jensen, Granada, Colorado.

In 1988, 21 people were killed because of an outbreak of the disease because of the poisoning of the hot dog, in 1985, 52 deaths were linked to an infected Mexican soft cheese.

CDC says about 800 bacterial diseases are recorded in the United States every year.
