The new research could be a revolution in treatments for cancer patients.

According to the RT channel, with the results of this study, patients can complete a full course of radiation therapy in less than 1 second , instead of lasting as few weeks as before.

In a study published on January 9, scientists demonstrated the effectiveness of a system-altering method, called Flash radiotherapy. This method works for cancer tumors similar to traditional radiation therapy, but the time will be greatly shortened.

Scientists at Ahramson Cancer Institute of the University of Pennsylvania (USA) have made the first breakthrough in strengthening cancer treatment methods. They used proton radiation to create the required amount of treatment for cancer patients with radiation therapy in less than 1 second.

The study also found that the Flash method is less harmful to healthy tissues because of the shorter exposure time to radiation.

'This is the first study to prove the effectiveness of using protons instead of electrons in radiation therapy,' study co-author James M Metz explains.

Researchers have previously approached this approach with traditional photons, but modern medical equipment has failed to produce the required dosage.

'We can develop specialized laboratory systems to create the required Flash treatment dose, proving that we can control proton rays,' concludes Metz.

The team said they have begun to optimize the method of using techniques in clinical trials.
