Moaning - how to find mosquitoes of mosquitoes

Scientists have long known that male mosquitoes notice the buzz of female mosquitoes to find suitable partners. But a recent study found female mosquitoes, although only the antenna set is quite simple, are the best listeners in the insect world.

The study also revealed how mosquitoes began the mating process.

When two mosquitoes approach each other - usually while traveling at about 1 mile / hour - each one changes its humming sound (created when the wing hits 600 times per second).

If the two sounds coincide, they will know that the other is the ideal partner. If the nuance changes too suddenly, they will immediately understand that they are pursuing an unacceptable homosexual relationship.

The researchers also said that it seems that different species of mosquitoes (about 3,000 species around the world) use different flapping wings to recognize mating partners.

The study was published by Gabriella Gibson from the Institute of Natural Resources at the University of Greenwich (UK) and Ian Russell from the University of Sussex in Current Biology.
