Experts from the Institute of Materials Science have turned motorcycle exhaust pipes into "clean" exhaust pipes by installing additional catalytic treatment units. This catalytic set is a honeycomb ceramic substrate impregnated with catalytic material, which converts toxic emissions into non-toxic.

This is a product in the research topic by Dr. Nguyen Van Vuong, Head of the Sub-institute of Rare Elements and Rare Earth Materials, Institute of Materials Science as the Chairman. "It was the times when I had to inhale smoke in the traffic jams, I was thinking of creating a product that could handle motorbike exhaust," Vuong said of the idea of ​​the product.

And the idea turned into reality after his Indian mission. Seeing the honeycomb ceramic skeleton handling your automobile's exhaust emissions, he immediately thought of a similar product in the exhaust to limit motor emissions."My difficulty is not being able to buy technology because the price is very high, but if ordering products in small quantities is not satisfactory," Vuong said.

The solution is to create a waste gas treatment product for the motorbikes based on the honeycomb ceramic skeleton with the shape, the number of holes . suitable to be placed in the exhaust pipe, how manufacturer acceptable. This product will have to be placed on the connecting line of the engine, in front of the shock absorber so as not to affect the exhaust gas, the operation of the engine and without additional fuel.

To prevent shock, the ceramic skeleton will be covered with a thin layer of quartz, both insulating between the catalytic material and the container, both against shock and vibration.

The ceramic skeleton has a structure like a " honeycomb " with many square holes with a total area of ​​the side walls in thousands of square centimeters , making the exhaust gas easily pass through catalytic materials, accelerating the process of CO oxidation HC, creating CO ₂ .

Mr. Vuong ran a test of a new motorcycle exhaust pipe in 5 months and removed it to check it intact. However, he said, the product life depends on the person who uses the vehicle and the type of vehicle. The project has been checked and accepted at the institute level and is expected to be released next year after completing the tests of the Register and the Ministry of Transport. The installation of an additional emissions processor costs about 10 USD.

The authors are confident that their environmentally friendly motorcycle exhaust products can compete with foreign firms. The next goal is to develop it into a set of products that can handle automotive emissions.
