Nam Dinh: Three years of sea level rise of 20cm

Since 2005, the sea level in Quat Lam town tourist area (Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province) has risen by 20cm. According to scientists, this is a profound expression related to climate change.
On February 28 and 29, in the framework of the conference "Global climate change and response solutions of Vietnam" , more than 100 delegates and scientists representing ministries, sectors and industries TN-MT and DARD had a field trip in Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province.
Giao Thuy is a coastal district of Nam Dinh province located in the Red River right bank, with more than 203,000 hectares of natural land surrounded by rivers and seas with more than 31 thousand km of coastline, 11.4 km of Red River, 15 km of So river. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dong - Vice Chairman of Giao Thuy District People's Committee - Nam Dinh Province, since the storm No. 5 in 2005, in the area of Bach Long - Giao Thuy coast and Quat Lam town tourist area, the water level. The sea has risen 20 cm.
Before 2005, the sea level did not rise, but since 2005, the sea level rise has been clearly revealed. This data was measured and recorded by the District Irrigation Construction Company and Nam Dinh Hydro-meteorological Center.
Every time the tide goes up, the sea level overflows this embankment into the resort road.In 2007, the local government invested another 50cm to prevent sea level from overflowing into the tourist area of Quat Lam town (Photo: Ng. Huyen)
In particular, each time the tide rises, the water level rises over the tourist road in Quat Lam town . Therefore, the local government had to organize high-level road in the tourist area of Quat Lam town from 20 to 50 cm and build a wave break.
The consequences of the 20 cm high water level have destroyed the entire environment and trees in the area, affecting the economic, tourism and environmental development of the district.
Through research, the district authorities are forced to invest and improve the elevation of the roads and construction works to serve the tourism development of the town. In 2005 and 2006, the province invested in Giao Thuy to upgrade nearly 6 km of dyke solidified sea dyke. In 2008, the Government invested more than 100 billion VND in Giao Thuy to overcome the weak dyke section. This amount is only partially met, currently proposing to the province and the Central Government to provide solidification funding for the whole sea dike system of the district.
Meanwhile, TS. Nguyen Ngoc Sinh - Chairman of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, head of the organizing committee of the conference " Global climate change and response solutions of Vietnam " said that the Association for Nature and Environment Protection VN has chosen Giao Xuan commune, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province as a testament to the impact related to climate change. This is a place where natural conditions are gathered for people to live on agriculture, fisheries, afforestation and salt production. At the same time, this is also the place where Giao Thuy National Park is located. After intense storms from 2005 and recent years, this place has been affected by the deep causes of climate change .
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hoe, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Management, Hanoi National University, formerly Quat Lam town tourist area is casuarina forest. Due to the development of tourism, the locality has replaced casuarina forest with a hotel near the sea. Therefore, they exposed their production to the risk of nature. When unusual storms and floods occur, this area is hard to resist.
