Narrow the heart to prolong life

For the first time, the method of reducing the size of the heart to increase the lifespan of heart failure patients will be conducted on humans, scientists at the Royal University of England said.

Doctors will put the device to function like a pacemaker in the vagus nerve. The device will generate electrical stimuli that help to shrink the size of the heart.

'We hope electrical stimulation will help shrink the heart but may not bring about normal size. The device will significantly improve symptoms as the heart gets bigger, symptoms get worse , 'said Dr. Jay Wright, a cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

The method has been tested on mice and dogs and helped them live longer. However, it has never been applied on people. Carl Jordan, a big heart-hearted English patient, will be the first to test.

'My quality of life at this time is not very good due to respiratory limitations. Surgery is an opportunity for me and my family to have a better life , 'the patient shared.

Surgeons at the Royal Heart and Chest Hospital of the Royal College of England will implant the device for Carl next week. In addition, nearly 100 patients will participate in trials at 30 hospitals around the world.

In the UK alone, there are nearly one million people suffering from heart failure, the consequences of high blood pressure, heart muscle death after a heart attack or genetics.
