New generation cosmic clothes
In the next decade, new cosmic clothes will appear, serving the work in space far from Earth and on the Moon.
On March 26 this year, the White House determined a new goal for NASA, which was to bring people back to the Moon by 2024. A debate about budget replenishment for NASA quickly took place.
It is estimated that NASA needs at least $ 10 billion more to implement the ambitious goal mentioned above. Interestingly, on May 14, 2019, it was reported that NASA suggested a 'modest' additional amount of 1.6 billion USD for the fiscal year 2020. Also in May, NASA announced the chapter. submit the first woman to the Moon. The program is called Artemis .
One of the essential ingredients for work on the Moon is space suits . Currently on the International Space Station ISS has 2 types of cosmic clothes as follows:
- Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) : Used for space astronauts on American astronauts
- Orlan : Used for Russian astronauts' space walks.
Both types of cosmic clothes adapt to low-trajectory jobs (LEO). The work in such clothes is usually done by two astronauts and lasts for 5-8 hours.
The design of cosmic clothing for the Moon mission may be much different than the EMU space clothes.
In addition, in recent years, three new types of cosmic clothes have appeared, namely SpaceX's clothing (July 2017), Boeing's space clothes (January / January). 2017) and Indian cosmic clothing (September 2018).
These suits will be used in spacecraft with new generation crews, flying low orbits.
For years, NASA has developed technology and solutions for the new generation of cosmic clothes. The return of humans to the Moon is a major challenge. There will definitely be a new kind of cosmic clothing for the Artemis program. This type of clothing must adapt to work in a weak gravitational condition (not a micro-attraction) full of cosmic dust.
For the above reasons, the design of cosmic clothing for the Moon mission may be much different than the EMU space clothes. Astronauts will have to bend down, even kneel, move on two feet or climb (such as climbing amphibious equipment). EMU suits, turned out, are not suitable for these operations.
It can be assumed that the ISS and the large astronauts' training swimming pools will be a test site for new types of space suits. There will be two important tests that will help evaluate the effectiveness of the design of space suits.
