Thinking of cherry blossoms, you will remember immediately to Japan. However, the official place to hold the title 'the cherry capital of the world' is a city located in Georgia, USA.
Besides Japan, which is famous for this beautiful flower, you can think of Washington DC (USA) as the ideal place to see cherry blossoms. However, few people know that the city of Macon in the state of Georgia is the only place to hold the title of the "cherry blossom capital of the world" .(Photo: Sean Pavone Photo / iStock).
This seemingly unremarkable city is located in central Georgia, 135km from Atlanta.Coming here in the spring, you will see a breathtaking sight rarely found.(Photo: Macon).
The first Yoshino-like cherry tree in the Macon was discovered by William A. Fickling Sr., a real estate broker. He noticed a strange pink flowering tree in the backyard in 1949. (Photo: Macona).
By 1952, when he arrived in Washington DC, he realized that it was a plant grown along Tidal Basin, and was known to be the Yoshino cherry.(Photo: Dang Travelers).
After that, Mr. Fickling learned how to breed plants and share them with the Macon community.People love this plant and more and more cherry trees are planted throughout the city.(Photo: Ashah Photography).
Today, the Macon has about 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees and other cherry varieties - 90 times as much as Washington DC (Photo: Insider).
Each spring, the Macon is submerged in the pink, white and dark pink of cherry blossoms. This is also the city where the International Cherry Blossom Festival takes place, with many interesting recreational activities and cultural events.(Photo: Insider).
The festival takes place from the end of March to the beginning of April. Visitors can walk to explore the city, or take a horse-drawn carriage to see the magnificent flowers.(Photo: Cosmos Mariners).
At night, flowers become more and more brilliant and subtle under the lights.(Photo: Insider).
Every year, Fickling Family fund supports thousands of cherry trees for Macon residents. Therefore, the number of cherry trees in this city will increase more and more.(Photo: Insider).
