According to archaeologist Linda Perry of the Washington Museum of Natural History, the author of the study, the analysis of these traces has proved that peppers have been used extensively in large quantities in the wet real in Mexico.

However, the study did not identify whether the peppers discovered in Guila Naquitz and Silvia caves near the city of Milta are similar to the current chili used.

Researchers noted that at that time people were able to use fresh and dried peppers.

The study was published in PNAS.
