People who live long often walk fast

A study shows that walking speed can be a useful sign to predict human life expectancy.

A group of medical experts from the University of Pittsburgh in the US collected medical data of 34,500 people to find out the relationship between step rate and life expectancy. They analyzed step rate, gender, age, body mass index, disease history and disease resistance of the study subjects, Livescience said.

The results showed that people with an average life expectancy of society had a footstep of about 0.8 meters per second (nearly 2.9 km / h). Those who walk one meter per second (about 3.6 km / h) or faster will have a greater life expectancy than those who walk slower. This trend is true for all ages and genders.

' We can prove that the quick step shows the health and dynamism of an individual, ' said Dr. Stephanie Studenski, professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in the US.

Experts say they can predict exactly who can live in the next 10 years by measuring the pace of their steps. The number becomes more accurate for people aged 75 and older. That means, for older people, step speed is one of the important indicators to assess health, like blood pressure or heart rate.

' The pace of human steps depends on health, the ability to control movement and coordination among our body parts. These factors require the smooth functioning of many systems in the body such as the cardiovascular system, nervous system, bones and muscles. Therefore, many scientists believe that step speed is a measure of human health in the past , 'Studenski told My Health News Daily.

The research team emphasized that people who are slow to walk cannot live longer if they try to walk faster.

' The body chooses the step speed that best suits us. Each person has a step rate and that's the health indicator, 'Studenski said.

He also knows, new discoveries will pave the way for the introduction of many practical applications. Measuring step speed is a fast and cheap way for seniors to evaluate their health. Similarly, doctors can monitor and evaluate patients' health based on step rate. We just need to look at any type of step of an individual to see if he or she is healthy, active and living long.
