Pollution causes one-fifth of Hong Kong residents to leave
According to a survey by the Civic Exchange, excessive pollution caused one fifth of Hong Kong's population, or 1.4 million people, to consider leaving. 500,000 of these people have detailed plans.
(Photo: Gmagazine) Michael DeGolyer, professor of political science in Hong Kong, said: ' People of all social sectors know that pollution is making them sick. Many people, including professors here, are thinking about leaving . ' Last week, official data showed that levels of pollution in some areas in Hong Kong reached a record.
The Environmental Protection Agency said more stringent measures have reduced pollution levels for some hazardous substances. The city has also called for improved air quality with the slogan ' The problem of life and death '. However, the new air quality standard has not yet been released.
In last year's report of the Civic Exchange, about 10,000 people die from environmental pollution every year in Hong Kong.
