Poopó Lake 1000km2 wide suddenly disappeared
The European Aeronautics Agency (ESA) has just published satellite images taken from April 2014 to January 2016, confirming that the second largest Lake Poopó in Bolivia has completely evaporated - literally. this word.
According to a reporter in Latin America, Lake Poopó is located in a basin of the Altiplano plateau, at an altitude of about 3,700 meters and a surface area of about 1,000 km 2 ; but only about 3 meters deep and in a relatively arid area.
Poopó Lake dried up through satellite images.Three photos were taken on April 27, 2014, July 20, 2015, and January 22, 2016.
Scientists say these natural conditions make Poopó very sensitive to changes in weather and climate. ESA warned: "although this is not the first time the Poopó has been completely evaporated (the last time was 1944), but there are many grounds to worry that this time it will take a lot of time for the lake to fill with water or even never ".
ESA's photo report reaffirmed its announcement in December 2015 by the Oruro state government, the western part of Bolivia, responsible for managing Poopó lake - on this phenomenon.
Poopó Lake has been dried up several times.
Besides being a living source for indigenous fishermen, Poopó is a stopover for migratory birds from north to south to avoid colds and is an important source of freshwater in a arid area for a the number of endangered animals like the Puma leopard in the Andes. The Bolivian government estimates it needs at least $ 114 million to "rescue" Lake Poopó from this drought.
