Producing electricity from garbage

On Dec. 13, South Korea just launched the world's largest waste-generating power plant, estimated to have reduced 500,000 barrels of imported oil and reduced 1.37 million tons of gas due to economic effects every year.

South Korea has just started operating the world's largest fuel production line and hopes to reduce imports to about 500,000 barrels of oil a year.

The power plant with a capacity of 50 MW, is capable of supplying fuel for about 180,000 households and started operation on December 11th. The power plant is located on a huge landfill in Incheon City, west of Seoul.

The fuel used to produce electricity is a natural methane gas generated from locally decomposed waste.

Park Han-Eop, an official of the waste management research division, told AFP that the production line will reduce the greenhouse effect due to methane incineration.

This waste-generating power plant will save Korea about 500,000 barrels of imported oil and minimize about 1.37 million tons of greenhouse gases each year.

This waste-generating power plant is invested by 77 billion won ($ 83 million) from a private energy company to take over the power for 11 years before being transferred to the Government.

Currently, Korea has about 12 power plants from waste that are under construction or have been operating nationwide. But these power plants have a small capacity of about 1-6 MW.
