Public pool contains up to 75 liters of urine
Scientists in Canada have done research on urine concentrations in public swimming pools and the results have surprised them.
According to Reuters, University of Alberta researchers have developed urine measurement tests of more than 250 samples from 31 pools and hot tubs in two Canadian cities.
Too much urine in the pool surprised the scientists.(Photo: Reuters).
They measured acesulfame-K (ACE) , a sweetener that can be released easily through urine and found 570 times more ACE in swimming pools and public baths than pine tap water. often. Later, the researchers used ACE levels in two pools for more than 3 weeks to estimate the level of urine.
The results show that in a swimming pool of 830,000 liters of water, equivalent to one third of the Olympic standard pool, contains up to 75 liters of urine, while another smaller sized pool contains 30 liters of urine.
Previously, a study published in the Environmental Science and Technology Letters magazine reported that people often discharge a variety of chemicals into the pool through body fluids. Besides, with the change of the pool water after a night at the 2016 Rio Olympics, they warned authorities to monitor water quality thoroughly.
This study also confirms that although urine is sterile, its presence in swimming pools is harmful because it combines with chemicals in the pool that can affect swimmer's health.
The City of Alberta's health care agency has not yet made any comments for this study.
