During the past 10 years, Dr. Nguyen Hong Vu (34 years old, alumnus of Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences) has devoted a lot of attention to studying the direction of new cancer treatment: using bacteria instead of chemotherapy, radiotherapy.
Cheap and specific
After graduating from biotechnology at Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences, Vu looked for opportunities to study abroad. Through the rigorous interview rounds, Vu was admitted to the program "Full Scholarship of Professor" of Chonnam National University - South Korea. Since 2006, he started working in kimchi to assist in research work for Professor Min Jung-joon. In return, he was paid by this professor to pay for his life as well as other types of tuition.
Nguyen Hong Vu completed his master's degree in 2008. In the next 4 years, he earned his doctorate in molecular biology applications in medicine. Later, he worked for Professor Min Jung-joon's laboratory as a full-time employee, acting as postdoc (postdoctoral research).
Nguyen Hong Vu has published to the world a very valuable work by him, which is a study on a new way of treating cancer: Using Salmonella intestinal bacteria instead of chemotherapy, radiation therapy as usual. Dr. Vu said that first, Salmonella bacteria are mutated in dangerous genes to become weak. On the other hand, this bacterium carries more glowing genes that can be easily located during treatment. Next, these bacteria will carry the ClyA toxin gene to those tumors and kill cancer cells.
This work has been published on Cancer Research - a leading prestigious industry magazine on cancer research. The works published in this journal must go through a series of evaluations by leading professors around the world in this area to prove that this is a new research project with high scientific value.

According to Dr. Vu, this treatment method has the advantage of being more specific than traditional methods. He explained: "After the bacterium is determined to accumulate in the tumor, L-Arabinose sugar will be injected into the body to stimulate the bacteria to produce ClyA toxins in the tumor and kill cancer cells. that, other healthy organs will not be affected by this treatment. " Not only that, according to Mr. Vu, raising bacteria for cancer treatment is much cheaper than using chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Currently, this work is being tested on rats and initially obtained positive results. Dr. Vu said that on January 23, he went to the US to work at the City of Hope Research Institute to improve and develop this new treatment.
Dr. Vu also said that it is not possible to say when this method can be applied to people, because from experiment to reality there is a long and hard way.
Empathy with patients
10 years living in South Korea, Mr. Nguyen Hong Vu trained Korean language quite well. Therefore, sometimes he was invited to translate for cancer patients in Vietnam to Hwasun Hospital (Korea) for examination and treatment. Among them, he remembers a young patient from Ho Chi Minh City. This child had a brain tumor, which was surgically removed by Korean medical experts and lived up to now. However, this case still left him without much grief, because my family had to borrow a lot to be able to cure me.
In addition, this is a meager lucky case among many other patients Mr. Vu helped and witnessed their deaths from cancer of evil monsters. From that sympathy, he urged him to think: if creating a new way of treating cancer in the future, it could be helpful for cancer patients, especially to reduce a lot of costs for the disease. poor people in Vietnam and in other countries.
It is known that while studying at Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Sciences, Nguyen Hong Vu was famous for successfully implementing a research project of the kind of "Catching" roses blooming in test tubes. However, when he came to Korea, he admitted that he had many difficulties. He expressed his heart: "In fact, the first 6 months through which I was very surprised with the techniques of modern labs. I plunged into learning from one person to another, self-searching, getting acquainted with the technology. new . Because the theory I have learned compared to reality is very big, after getting the foundation, I started pursuing, improving the research of the previous ones and determined to make the new research ". Dr. Vu added: "In research, many times when testing 10, 50, 100 failures can be successful, that's normal."
Reportedly, Mr. Vu's wife is a young doctor Phan Xuan Thuy (32 years old). Although different in the academic year, the two students studied in the same industry as the university in Vietnam as well as advanced levels in Korea. In addition, the two also share a research work (co-chairing a project with a Korean person) on the interaction of bacteria that treat cancer with the response of the body's immune system. This work has just been published in a major prestigious magazine in the world on "combination treatment diagnosis" , Theranostics.
"My concern at the moment is how to make what I have been and will explore in the future can help my homeland in particular and humanity in general" , Vu affirmed. determined.
