In Huong Hoa ethnic minority district of Quang Tri province, banana trees have become a poverty reduction and enrichment plant for many households in recent years. Banana products are not only supplied to the domestic market, but also exported to countries like China and Japan. Thanks to the income from bananas, many households have escaped from poverty and become better off with an annual income of VND 60-70 million, with an income model of over VND 100 million.

Therefore, in the direction of crop restructuring in Huong Hoa, banana trees have been identified as a key crop that farmers focus on expanding their area. At present, Huong Hoa district has developed banana cultivation area of about 1,500ha, concentrating mainly in communes of Tan Long, Tan Thanh, Lao Bao and some communes of Leai.

However, because bananas become more and more aging, degenerating pests and diseases, plus outdated cultivation process, reducing productivity and quality. From this fact, the Center for Applied Science and Technology Application of Quang Tri Province implemented the project 'Restoring some banana varieties in Huong Hoa district by Invitro method'.

Two types of bananas selected for biotechnology to be restored are banana seed (western bananas) and dwarf bananas (dwarf bananas) that have been cultivated for a long time in Huong Hoa district. After nearly 1 year of implementation, the Center has successfully propagated these bananas. The restored bananas have grown well, according to the research requirements. According to the assessment of the Science Council of Quang Tri Province, this is a highly practical topic, contributing to poverty reduction, economic growth and income generation for mountainous people.

The project has been applied scientific and technological advances in breeding, restoration of varieties, creating a large number of disease-free plants, genetically guaranteed, making an important contribution to sustainable development. firmly growing banana cultivation in Huong Hoa. This research topic will continue to be implemented until August 2013.
